  • Flowering Details:

  • Historic South Pasadena featuring “our kids” is a great format for a decorator.  We will be using more than 1,000 lbs of seed, beans, and dry materials to cover our structures. This includes specialty seeds such as cranberry and amaranthis from Oregon. Flowers include dendrobiums, orchid and rose bushes, accented by carnations, gerber daisies, mums, alasdromeria, ginger, and birds of paradise.

  • The cranberry seed will be used to give us our historic car it’s vivid red color.

South Pasadena streets, which are lined with flowering trees, has also inspired us to adorn the float with hundreds of dendrobiums orchid and rose bushes.  Our green base will be covered with real grass sod.

Our gardens will bloom from the grass and will include more than 6,000 roses, 1,000 iris, 2,000 carnations, 600 gerber daisies, 1,500 mums, 600 alasdromeria, 500 ginger, and 400 birds of paradise.  We will enhance the garden in front of our float by using large red roses.

  • Different use of flowers (unique/of special interest):

Amaranthis seed is a shiny black color and is very hard to come by.  So hard in fact that we refer to it as “liquid gold”.   It is perfect for detailed highlighting on various parts of the float, including signs and river rock, which is seen all over South Pasadena.

    Animation

The trolley car – known as the Pacific Electric Red Car – which once traversed the streets in South Pasadena, will come to life with a not-so-gentle rocking motion, reminiscent of the real thing!

    South Pasadena Strings,

    Susan Pascale, Founder/ Director

    A.J. Pasacle, Director

In 2001 Susan Pascale  a former symphonic violinist, moved from Long Island, New York, to South Pasadena, California. Upon arrival she went to the local public school to enroll her then 2nd grader in the school orchestra.

There was none. Panicked, she wandered around the school's picnic tables offering free violin lessons to anyone that would listen. Twenty-five students immediately signed up for her free 6 week class!  This was the start of the South Pasadena Strings Program.

It's been 8 years and Pascale's students are getting younger and better.

In 2009 the South Pasadena Strings returned for their second performance at Carnegie Hall. This time with the Children's Orchestra, with an age range of 5 to 12 years old.  Not only did the South Pasadena Children's Orchestra receive a Gold rating, they won a World Record for the "Youngest Orchestra recorded to perform at Carnegie Hall"

South Pasadena Strings have been featured in both local and national media, including MSNBC, The Larry Elder Show, NBC News, ABC's Eye on LA, Los Angeles Times and others.

Susan and A.J. Pascale live with their 3 children, all musicians, in South Pasadena and run th e ever expanding South Pasadena Strings Program.

  • Float Theme: "Our Kids"

    How/Why was this theme chosen?

The design for the oldest self-built float in the parade is open to a community-wide design contest. Our theme, “Our Kids,” was selected when a gorgeous design was submitted with historic South Pasadena buildings as a backdrop for our vibrant and talented youth, who represent the next generation in our proud community.
