South Pasadena – A Creative Community

There’s a focus on the arts in South Pasadena, perhaps because so many industry professionals live here. Film and television insiders, musicians, artists, architects and authors are plentiful. Theater patrons and art lovers abound. In fact, South Pasadena has been identified as being in the Top Ten list of Creative Communities in LA that are havens for "the Creative Class". This, according to Richard Florida, Co-Founder and Editor at Large at The Atlantic Cities, results in a burgeoning gallery scene, live concerts, Art Walks and Eclectic Music Festival.

World Class Music

Since 1995, residents of South Pasadena have been able to enjoy world-class musical performances right in their own community because of the Restoration Concerts series, sponsored by the Friends of South Pasadena Library. The program attracts award-winning musicians to play in the Andrew Carnegie library's historic Community Room.

Every Wednesday evening there's a spirit-lifting hootenanny at Firefly Bistro when Brad Colerick's Wine & Song series presents up and coming singer-songwriters side by side with seasoned pros.

The South Pasadena Music Center & Conservatory is also home to an exciting series of free concerts featuring the best in Jazz, Classical, World Music, Folk, Experimental and much more. SPMCC hosts monthly open mic nights and jazz jams open to all.

Concerts in Garfield Park are regular features in the Summer, presented by the City of South Pasadena and local business sponsors. And throughout the year many live acts are booked by the South Pasadena Public Library for the visiting author series, and by the Chamber of Commerce for various festivals and events.

Performing Arts

South Pasadena is home to the Fremont Centre Theater.  The cozy stage with a lovely courtyard is a favorite of the locals and draws patrons far and wide. It has been the darling of the media, the critics, and the public for over a decade. Its owners, the husband and wife team of James Reynolds and Lissa Layng Reynolds, are accomplished actors and producers who love their home town South Pasadena.

Arts at the Library

The South Pasadena Public Library and Friends of the South Pasadena Public Library present live music, author nights, classic and Indie movies with actors and directors on hand for Q&A, and many other wonderful special events. The library entrance is adorned with Merrell Gage sculptures, and the interior of the Children's Library has original murals by famed author/illustrator Leo Politi.

Eclectic Music Festival

South Pasadena hits a high note on the first Saturday each May with the Eclectic Music Festival and Art Walk—an inspiring evening of live music in three festival areas, exhibitions in art galleries and open houses in the Indie boutiques. Thousands come from South Pasadena and the San Gabriel Valley to  hear dozens of musical groups in an eclectic cross-section of styles, from folk and jazz to rock and roll. Two beer gardens, food trucks and great festival treats are located at the two main outdoor stages. For details visit
